Susie greeted them with the most vibrant copper and green hair that Morgan had ever seen. Ben did a double-take but kept quiet. It amused Morgan how Susie’s hair shocked him every time despite him knowing that it was going to be magnificent.

‘Love, love the hair, Susie.’

‘Thanks, Morgan, it’s in honour of you.’

‘Wow, it’s amazing, isn’t it, Ben?’ She jabbed him in the ribs with her elbow.

‘Yeah, it’s truly something. How’s Declan holding up? Is there any update on Theo?’

Susie glanced over her shoulder. ‘He’s better than I expected.’

‘Declan or Theo?’ asked Ben.

‘Well, both of them. Declan is a bit quiet and looks like shit. I don’t think he should be here but he’s insisting he’s fine and doesn’t want to be anywhere else. Theo is still stable, no news from ICU, which is good news I suppose. They promised they’d phone Declan if there’s any change.’

They followed her down to the changing rooms, then into the mortuary where Declan was fiddling with the radio he kept on the shelf at the back. A noughties station began to play, and he turned around. Morgan couldn’t help herself and before she knew it she was hugging him. He held her tight, swaying her from side to side then kissed the top of her head.

‘Away with you, you’re going to make me cry.’

She had tears in her eyes already and blinked to clear them. ‘How is he?’

‘He’s good, amazingly good. I guess he has a head as tough as yours, thank the good Lord Jesus.’

Ben smiled at him. ‘That’s brilliant news.’

Morgan went back to stand by Ben’s side. She looked at Ben and wanted to hug him too, but restrained herself. Ben had been in this situation with her far too many times, and he knew how heartsick it made you feel with the worry, and she wondered how he stayed on the force, or with her for that matter, when trouble seemed to follow her around.

‘I thought we’d start with Rosie,’ Declan began. ‘Call me old-fashioned, but I like to do the ladies first and I’m sure her partner wouldn’t object.’

Morgan wasn’t so sure Matt would have cared. If her hunch was right, then things weren’t as happy in Rosie and Matt’s house as their outward appearance suggested.

The sound of the body bag being unzipped brought Morgan back into the room. She had drifted someplace in her work mind and, faced with the other option, she figured she’d kind of liked to have stayed there.

The team had already carried out all of the preliminary observations on both bodies. Wendy and Joe were both working diligently to document everything. Morgan smiled at Joe. She’d given him a hard time over the last case when he’d unknowingly become party to two teenage girls’ reckless plans. He’d forgiven her though, his easy going-manner was just as well.

Her eyes finally rested on Rosie’s deathly white face. She had once asked Declan why the skin went such a pale colour so fast after death, and he’d told her the medical term for it was pallor mortis.
